One of the marketing tools used in virtual worlds, and an evolution in 3D motion animation technology, is machinima,
or "machine cinema", which is a real-time animated video produced
within an edutainment or video game-type environment. The technological
aspects of machinima represent one of several emerging applications
that is crossing over into "real life". Machinima posted on YouTube
is classified under the "Film and Animation" category. Animated videos
also often appear on other online sources and can be integrated into
company websites.
Machinima is used to demonstrate products
and services; as a training tool; to convey 3D concepts; a
traffic-builder to the "real world" from the virtual world; and conversely,
to increase traffic using more traditional and Internet-based avenues to drive virtual commerce. Pulse
Point Marketing clients in Second Life® have utilized machinima to
demonstrate both real and virtual commercial ventures, as a means to
reinforce virtual branding, and to even raise funds for nonprofit
organizations.
